School: St.George’s School Cologne

Every student has something to give, our job is to help them discover it.

“We care about every student, family and staff member and work continuously to equip pupils with the skills to change the world for the better”.

Stephen studied at the University of Manchester, first at the School of Biological Sciences, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Anatomical Sciences. He later graduated from the University’s School of Education, with a PGCE in Secondary Science and Biology. In addition, he is qualified to teach Theory of Knowledge and Psychology in the IB Diploma.

After working for two years in state schools in Manchester, Stephen moved to work at a British International School in Sevilla, Spain where he taught from Year 3 to Year 11. Having relocated to Cologne with his wife, to experience a new culture and a new language, he joined St.George’s as a Science teacher in 2013. Stephen deeply appreciates how the school bridges traditional British values with a modern, global perspective. Over the years he embraced the culture of continuous professional development that is at the heart of St.George’s Schools and stepped into the role of Assistant Head of Middle School, later elevating student learning as Head of Upper School.

Working closely with students across such a wide age range has helped Stephen develop perspective and a deep understanding of the journey students take through our school.

Pastoral care and educating the whole child are an essential aspect of the St.George's education to foster well-rounded individuals who are not only academically successful but also emotionally resilient, socially competent, and ethically responsible. By addressing the diverse needs of students from different cultures, Stephen creates an environment where every child can reach their full potential. He encourages them to build, maintain and improve our school community. Alongside his work as IB Diploma Coordinator, Stephen feels lucky to get to see students through both a pastoral and an academic lens. Having this global overview of their development is a huge privilege and a responsibility he takes seriously.

Integrity, equity, and transparency are at the core of every interaction Stephen has with students, parents and staff. He goes above and beyond to create a nurturing and supportive environment where everyone feels valued, understood, and empowered to thrive. His door is perpetually open, and he is always available to help.

“I find immense joy in collaborating with students to unravel seemingly insurmountable challenges. Guiding and empowering them to unleash their full potential feels akin to wielding a superpower.”
